SPACESHIP LYRA LOGS
Speculative Fiction by Linda Rigsbee
These are the expeditions of Spaceship Lyra; dedicated to assisting friend or foe - on planets or in space. No assignment is too small or too large for her specialized crew.
Supreme commander Donte is a mascot - a human genetically altered with animal genes. Mascots were originally designed to protect and guide the colonists on a new planet, so they are the ideal crew for a research and rescue spaceship. They have attributes that no other human has, and they could live 350 to 400 years - assuming they survive their next assignment.
Marlin Delaney has wanted to be involved in the colonization of a planet ever since she can remember. She has been accepted and she isn’t going to let anything rob her of the opportunity – not rape, pregnancy or the addition of the man she hates to their team.
Donte’s mate has left him and he has resigned as the Ruler of Bergen on the planet Purlieu, so when he is invited to join the expedition to planet Opus, he accepts.
Marlin blames Donte for killing her grandfather and causing the separation of her parents. Everything is falling apart in her life and he is a handy target. Marlin doesn’t want the baby or the association with Donte but she will have to compromise for the good of the expedition and the colonization of Opus.
When they fall into a cavern and everyone thinks they drowned, they must work together or perish.
When Donte discovers that a distress signal has been received from Arcane, his first thought is that Fontalo lied about the planet being uninhabitable - the way they lied about Purlieu. He is supreme commander of the Lyra, a research and rescue spaceship that has spent the last three years assisting the colonization of Opus. Someone needs help, so he feels compelled to respond.
The death of Hayley's grandfather makes her the sole survivor of the Fontalo scientific team on Arcane. She and her grandfather were taken to a hidden canyon ten years ago to escape the Sentinels. With his death, her actions will no longer put anyone else at risk, so she sends a distress signal.
What Donte and his crew discover on Arcane sets off a chain of historic events. It is, by far, his most challenging mission - and the most tragic.
People are disappearing on Planet Opus but General Richards doesn’t want assistance – especially not from the aliens of Planet Arcane. Nevertheless, Planet Oriel requests assistance from rescue Spaceship Lyra’s Supreme Commander Donte to determine the cause of disappearing miners. The bumbling methods of General Richards result in the capture of Donte’s wife and daughter. Donte threatens retaliation if anyone interferes with his search for his family. Has Donte gone rogue?
The mission becomes deadly when Donte and Saar are critically wounded with poisoned arrows. Donte’s wife and child take his place in subduing a futile rebellion. It is only the beginning of their troubles.
Donte’s special skills are sought when humans are discovered on another planet. When the natives of planet Quay will not cooperate with the linguistics specialist, Fontalo sends Ricardo to get Donte.
Donte is a mascot, a human/animal mixture created by Fontalo for the purpose of assisting colonists. He is the Supreme Commander of research and rescue spaceship Lyra. His genetic makeup assures not only that he is superior to humans, but that he has a life expectancy of up to 400 years, due to an improved immune system. Mascots don’t catch viruses or diseases…or do they?
When even mascots begin falling critically ill, everyone is searching for a cause – and and origin. Could it be something on Planet Quay or something much closer to home?
